Town of culture

"When the Elector came to Schwetzingen, followed by his outstanding orchestra, court society felt swept away to a magical island where everything was sounding and singing. From the bathhouse, the most voluptuous music sounded at night, and the magical sounds of the small village's virtuosos could be heard from every corner and hut." (Christian Friedrich Daniel Schubart). This is how contemporaries of the art-loving Prince Elector Charles Theodore spoke of the musical life of the Electoral Palatinate court of the arts. They outdid each other in their descriptions of the Electoral Palatinate's Versailles with superlatives and often spoke of a "paradise for artists of sound" (Friedrich Heinrich Jakobi).

Obliged to this legacy of the court of the art, which helped characterise the era under art-loving Prince-Elector Charles Theodore, music and culture still play an important role in modern Schwetzingen. Every year, from the end of April to mid-June, Schwetzingen is at the focus of the world of music, when the famous Schwetzingen Festival takes place in the castle theatre and the splendid circular halls of the Schwetzingen castle. During the rest of the year, the small town at the heart of the Electoral Palatinate also offers a well-balanced cultural landscape comprising all areas of music, play and exhibitions.
